LinkedIn is a social network for professionals that operates via websites and mobile apps. The main aim of it is to allow members (both employee and employers) to maintain their “connection” with people who they know and trust in the real commercial world. Members can also invite anybody to become a connection.
Linkedln was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman and his team in California, U.S. and officially launched in 2003. By the end of 2011, it had more than 15 million registered accounts in 200 countries. Currently, it has more than 500 million registered members and is available in 24 languages. It has around 10,000 employees around the world and Microsoft acquired Linkedln for $26.2 billion in 2016.
Here are some features of LinkedIn.
I. Keep in touch with old co-workers and alumni. Users can find old co-workers, classmates, teachers and anybody that can help with their career via the My Network section. The users just need to connect their email account to sync their contacts with LinkedIn.
II. Apply for a job. Many companies upload the company information to LinkedIn, giving users a general overview of the company. Users can also get job recommendations from Linkedln according to users’ interests, users can use the search bar to find specific positions too.
III. Use the profile as resume. Basically, the LinkedIn profile is an interactive resume. Users can include their LinkedIn profile link in the resume or cover letter when applying for jobs.
IV. Connect with new professionals. Apart from finding old coworkers and classmates, LinkedIn also allow users to discover new professionals that may help with their career. Users can always join different industry-based groups to create connections with professionals in the industry.
V. Job Recruitment. Since there are more than 500 million users around the world, many job recruiters and personnel HR are now using LinkedIn to find potential candidates. Recruiters can find members matching their specific requirement by using the Advanced search tools. Then the recruiters can reach the right candidate by sending InMail or a request to connect.
