Social Media Marketing (or short SMM) can be referred to as making use of social media sites, to attract attention and traffic. This form is becoming more and more, the most successful one of marketing, with a constant increase in social media users. By 2020 estimated 2.95 billion humans will be using social media and are displayed for marketers to target them with specific ads – A huge opportunity for companies to persuade customers and increase sales.

One of the key components of SMM is social media optimization (SMO). It is a strategy to attract new and unique visitor to a website and can be done two ways: adding social media links to content, such as RSS feeds and sharing buttons or promoting activity through social media by updating statuses or tweets, or blog posts.

One of SMM’s many advantages are that it helps companies to connect with customers on a more personal level. Companies receive direct feedback and give customers the opportunity to be publicly heard by giving them an interactive platform to ask questions or issue complaints. This aspect of Social media marketing is called customer relation management (or CRM)

What makes social media marketing so interesting is, that it not only can help the brand image but also allows ads to go viral. You have probably seen it yourself. A funny ad or playful comments that spread like wildfire on social media. A great example are the “Doritos” ads. Such ads lead to users engaging more with its content: commenting, tagging their friends or sharing the post so people will see it over and over again, til it’s stuck in their mind. This is one of the most important benefits of social media marketing. A good advertisement can go viral without having to pay more to be displayed.
